There has been a major increase in eco-tourism, particularly in the last decade or so. Elephant sanctuaries with an eco-tourism model provide better welfare for the elephants: a more natural environment where elephants are free to roam without being chained or giving tourists rides.

Wildlife Friends Foundation was Asia’s first completely chain- free elephant sanctuary and relies upon volunteers and donations to operate. The elephants there live in peace, having previously suffered decades of abuse. Each elephant has a sad past that includes neglect and mistreatment, but WFFT allows them to have a happy end to their lives.
