Chatachuk Market, Bangkok, Thailand
Chatachuk Market, Bangkok, Thailand - shot on film
I visited the infamous Chatachuk Market in January 2023. I was horrified at the conditions the animals were kept in. Most were without access to food and water, and kept in small dirty cages. Chatachuk is well known for its shocking animal welfare conditions and often illegal wildlife trading.
On 11th June 2024 at 04:30 in the morning, a huge fire broke out, tragically killing around 1,000 animals that were trapped in their cages. Cats, dogs, snakes and monkeys were among the animals that perished. The fire was said to have occurred due to an electrical fault.
Animal rights activists have been campaigning for years about the dire animal welfare conditions at the market. My hope is that in the wake of this devastating incident the animal section of the market will be permanently closed.
